About Tsala Trails

FGASA professional trails guide
professional trails guide training

Our philosophy is rooted in creating safaris that feel deeper, more personal, and more immersive.

At many lodges, walking safaris are limited to a brief interlude between game drives. We noticed something different. Those moments on foot were often the most memorable. That insight shaped Tsala Trails.

Walking safaris are our speciality and the heart of what we do. We design safaris where time on foot plays a central role, creating a deeper, more sensory connection with the bush. Alongside this, our journeys can also include expertly guided vehicle-based and mixed-format safaris, allowing each experience to be tailored to the landscape, the wildlife, and the guest. The result is a more considered way to explore Africa, one that puts immersion first and choice at the centre of every safari.

Born From Frustration With Factory Safaris

Before Tsala Trails, Koenraad worked as a guide at luxury lodges across Southern Africa. The properties were exceptional. The wildlife was incredible. But something felt off.

Safari operations were run like factories. Guides moved from one vehicle to the next, ticking off the Big Five for guests who'd spend more time behind a camera than in the moment. Walking safaris – the experiences guests remembered most – were treated as add-ons, squeezed between game drives.

Koenraad wanted to create something where walking wasn't secondary. Where the guide actually knew the guests. Where safaris weren't about checklists.

MEET YOUR GUIDE

The Guide Behind Tsala Trails

Koenraad Pretorius didn't learn guiding from a textbook. His tracking instincts were shaped in the Kalahari, where he grew up with his family. This early exposure taught him to be part of the bush, rather than owning it, a trait most guides never develop.

Formal qualifications followed: a BCom in Investment Management (the business brain), then FGASA Professional Field, Marine, and Trails Guide certifications. Today, he holds Mentor and Assessor status – which means he trains the guides who work elsewhere.

But credentials only tell part of the story.

In 1995, at age four, Koenraad received a liver transplant. Years later, after a health crisis forced him to reassess everything, he made a choice: return to nature or stay in the corporate world that was wearing him down.

Against every recommendation from his doctors, he chose the bush. And for the past nine years, he's been healthier than ever.

That experience shaped his philosophy: the wilderness heals. Not through magic, but through presence. When you slow down, pay attention, and let the rhythm of nature reset your own, something shifts.

That’s what you can witness on every bush experience with him, specially on a walk. This isn't about pampered indulgence. It's about presence, connection, and the kind of experience that stays with you long after you've left Africa.

You will never forget the moment of being eye to eye with a Rhino.

What We Believe About Walking Safaris

Walking safaris aren't about covering distance or ticking off sightings. They're about slowing down enough to notice. The call of the Crested Francolin at first light. The way elephant tracks tell a story from the night before. The moment a guest stops asking questions and just listens.

We keep groups small – usually no more than six guests – because intimacy matters. Koenraad guides personally, which means every safari is shaped by someone who genuinely knows the bush, the lodges, and how to read what guests need in the moment. We pair authentic wilderness experiences with carefully selected lodges. Not ultra-luxury (we're honest about that), but quality properties at 3-4 star level that perform well above their rates. Comfort without excess. Raw trails. Refined rest.

This isn't about pampered indulgence. It's about presence, connection, and the kind of experience that stays with you long after you've left Africa.

MEET KATHARINA

The Other Half of Tsala

Behind every Tsala Trails safari is Katharina: Koenraad’s fiancée, ecologist, shaping Tsala Trails’ values, communication, and conservation focus.

Originally from Germany, Katharina brings both a European perspective and a strong scientific foundation to Tsala Trails. She holds a degree in Biology and is currently completing her Master of Science in Ecology and Conservation. Her academic background shapes how Tsala understands landscapes, ecosystems, and the role tourism plays within them.

Katharina strongly believes that ecotourism can be a powerful tool for conservation, if done honestly. Too often, financial gain takes precedence over meaningful ecological impact. With this in mind, Tsala Trails carefully selects destinations and partners that actively contribute to meaningful conservation. When traveling with Tsala Trails, guests can be confident that their journey supports projects and places genuinely worth protecting.

Katharina shapes Tsala Trails’ voice across languages and platforms. She is also able to guide safaris in German and regularly joins walks and activities in the bush. With her own guiding qualifications and scientific background, she adds ecological context, scientific insight, and a deeper understanding of the environments explored.

Together with Koenraad, Katharina ensures that Tsala Trails remains rooted in integrity, knowledge, and a deep respect for the wild places and people it works with.

What Makes Us Different

Independence

We don't own lodges or properties. That independence means we recommend what's genuinely best for your experience, not what benefits us financially. Our partnerships are built on trust, not ownership.

Purposeful Experience

Beyond an unforgettable wildlife experience, each journey is designed with conservation in mind, allowing you to enjoy the adventure while contributing to the protection and recovery of the species and habitats you encounter.

A-Z Handling

From the first enquiry to the final thank-you, one person manages your entire journey. No handoffs between departments. No confusion about who's responsible. Just seamless, personal service from start to finish.

We've Grown Beyond Where We Started

While our expertise is in walking safaris, Tsala Trails has evolved into something broader. We now design fully tailor-made safaris across Africa – combining walking, vehicle-based game viewing, and multi-destination itineraries.

Our Signature Journeys cater to discerning photographers and birders, with limited-availability expeditions timed around seasonal highlights and rare wildlife opportunities.

We also work with lodges and reserves across Africa, helping them develop their guiding teams, refine soft skills, and create more integrated guest experiences. It's consulting work born from years of seeing what works (and what doesn't) in safari operations.

But no matter how we've grown, the philosophy stays the same: authentic experiences, expert guidance, and personal service that treats guests like companions, not transactions.
