What should I pack for the safari?
Bring neutral-coloured clothing such as khaki, brown, beige, or navy. Comfortable, sturdy shoes with ankle support are essential, and gaiters are recommended. Include a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle, and tick or insect repellent. Cameras and binoculars are optional but highly recommended. Don’t forget any personal medication, including an EpiPen if required. Avoid brightly coloured clothing, including red, orange, yellow, fluorescent shades, or white, as these can disturb wildlife.
Do I need to worry about malaria?
Kruger National Park is a malaria zone during the summer months. Pack mosquito repellent and long-sleeved shirts and trousers for evening activities, and consult your doctor for appropriate medical advice.
What is the weather like?
Winter in South Africa runs from May to September, with mornings around 11°C/52°F and midday temperatures reaching 24–27°C/75–81°F. Pack warm layers, gloves, hats, and scarves. Game viewing can be easier in winter as vegetation is less dense and animals gather around permanent water sources. Summer lasts from October to April, with hot, humid conditions averaging 32°C/90°F and sometimes exceeding 40°C/104°F. Storms are frequent but brief, so bring light layers and waterproof options. The rainy season brings migratory birds and newborn antelope, offering unique wildlife viewing opportunities.
