Where You’ll Stay
Begin your journey at Phinda Private Game Reserve, a 28,555-hectare sanctuary in northern KwaZulu-Natal with rare sand forests, rolling savanna, wetlands, and Lebombo mountain slopes. Home to over 400 bird species and 30 large mammals—including cheetah, lion, elephant, rhino, and pangolin—Phinda offers an extraordinary wildlife experience. Phinda Forest Lodge sits lightly within an ancient sand forest, with glass-walled suites among Torchwood and Ironwood trees. Nyala and Suni move quietly through the undergrowth while forest birds fill the canopy with sound, blending modern comfort with deep tranquillity.
The journey continues in southern Kruger, near the Sabie and Sand Rivers, where riverine forests, Marula woodlands, and open grasslands teem with wildlife. Plains Camp, set beneath Knobthorn trees overlooking a shallow pan, captures the romance of safari walking with modern comfort. Guests follow elephant paths, track lion spoor, and feel the whisper of the wilderness, while evenings are spent around the fire under the Milky Way, fully immersed in the rhythms of the African bush.

What should I pack for the safari?
Bring neutral-coloured clothing such as khaki, brown, beige, or navy, along with comfortable, sturdy shoes that provide ankle support. Gaiters are recommended, as well as a sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Carry a water bottle, tick and insect repellent, and any personal medication you may need, including an EpiPen if applicable. Cameras and binoculars are optional but highly recommended.
What should I leave at home?
Avoid brightly coloured clothing, including red, orange, yellow, fluorescent shades, and even white, as these can disturb wildlife.
Do I need to worry about malaria?
Phinda Game Reserve and Kruger National Park are malaria zones during summer. It is advisable to bring mosquito repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers in the evening. Consult your doctor for appropriate medical advice before travel.
What is the weather like in South Africa?
Winter in South Africa runs from May to September, the dry season. Rainfall is minimal, but temperatures can drop to around 11°C (52°F) in the early morning, rising to 24–27°C (75–81°F) by midday. Pack warm layers, gloves, hats, and scarves for early mornings and evenings. Wildlife viewing is excellent during winter as vegetation is less dense and animals gather near permanent water sources.
Summer occurs from October to April and is hot and humid, with temperatures averaging 32°C (90°F) and occasionally exceeding 40°C (104°F). Short, frequent storms may occur, so pack light layers and waterproof clothing. The wet season brings migratory birds and newborn antelope, making it a rewarding time for wildlife observation.
