CONTINUING THE JOURNEY | WHERE STONE BECOMES MEMORY

In our previous Whispers on Stone articles, we explored how slowing down allows us to see the natural world differently. We discovered that landscapes are far more than beautiful scenery; they are living libraries, patiently waiting for those willing to observe. Every weathered cliff, ancient tree, winding river and animal track carries a story.
In the Waterberg, we followed those lessons through towering sandstone cliffs and ancient geological formations, learning that every landscape carries the marks of time. Rocks became chapters, valleys became archives, and the wilderness revealed itself not as empty space, but as a place layered with memory.
Our journey now takes us farther north, into Namibia.
Here the language of the landscape changes once again. We begin to encounter marks left by people who walked through these valleys thousands of years before us. At Brandberg and Twyfelfontein, stone became the surface upon which generations of hunter-gatherers expressed aspects of their beliefs, rituals, knowledge and relationships with animals and the surrounding landscape.
Yet the lesson remains familiar. Reading rock art, like reading tracks, relies on observation, curiosity and an appreciation that no sign can be properly understood without its wider context.
Brandberg and Twyfelfontein also reveal that such places were never entirely isolated. Long before modern roads, political borders or written histories, people moved through southern Africa in response to water, weather, wildlife, plant foods and social relationships. Rivers, mountains, valleys and coastlines formed part of an interconnected human world.
Shared symbols and broadly related artistic traditions can be recognised from Namibia’s granite mountains to the rock shelters of the Southern Cape and the peaks of the Drakensberg. These similarities do not mean that every community lived or believed in exactly the same way. Rather, they suggest that ideas, traditions and ways of understanding the natural world travelled between people and endured through generations.
Walking Through Time
Walking through these places offers us a way of travelling through time.
Katharina and I set out across Namibia not simply to see the country, but to understand it. Our route took us from Windhoek to Etosha, Epupa Falls, the Marienfluss Valley, the Hoarusib River, Puros, Palmwag, the Skeleton Coast and Terrace Bay, before continuing to Swakopmund, Sossusvlei, Aus, Keetmanshoop and finally home to Hoedspruit. Before all of that, we spent time on our family farm near Askham in the Kalahari.
I have travelled through Namibia several times, yet every visit leaves me with the same feeling: I have barely scratched the surface. It is a country that refuses to reveal itself quickly. The distances are immense, the silence overwhelming, and the landscapes demand patience rather than haste.
One could write an entire book about Namibia’s geology, wildlife and people, so this story focuses on one question that stayed with me throughout the journey.
On our way towards Terrace Bay, we stopped at the Petrified Forest before continuing to Twyfelfontein. By evening we crossed through the Springbokwasser Gate into the Skeleton Coast National Park.
That moment is difficult to describe.
Fog rolled inland from the Atlantic, darkness settled over the gravel plains, and suddenly the world became empty. There were no villages, no lights and no movement. Only endless stone disappearing into mist.
My hands tightened around the steering wheel as we drove through what genuinely felt like the edge of another planet. We eventually reached Terrace Bay at around nine o’clock that Sunday evening, welcomed by bitterly cold winds and an isolated settlement that felt more at home on the Arctic Circle than on the African continent. Brown hyaenas and black-backed jackals wandered around the fish-cleaning station, scavenging the remains left behind by anglers.
The following morning, we explored the coastline, following old lion tracks through the sand, desert lions moving between one of the harshest coastlines on Earth and the equally unforgiving interior.
The experience left me wondering about Twyfelfontein.
Yes, the engravings are extraordinary. Yes, they are thousands of years old.
But why here?
Having now travelled through much of north-western Namibia, the location seemed almost impossible. The distances between reliable water sources are enormous. In places, one can see for sixty kilometers without another obvious sign of life. To anyone familiar with southern Africa, it almost feels as though people deliberately chose one isolated place after another.
Several days later, while sitting with Katharina and my brother Pierre at a traditional German restaurant in Swakopmund, the answer began to reveal itself.
The owner, Manie, was entertaining several friends that evening. One gentleman, originally from Grootfontein and descended from one of Namibia’s long-established German families, joined our conversation. Educated in Stellenbosch and deeply knowledgeable about Namibia’s history, he casually mentioned something that stopped me in my tracks.
“The people from Twyfelfontein travelled to the coast along the riverbeds.”
That single sentence changed the way I viewed the entire landscape.
Today, the dry rivers appear empty. They are broad gravel channels winding through mountains and desert. Yet ephemeral rivers such as the Huab, Hoanib and Uniab formed natural corridors. Following them could provide access to freshwater springs, edible plants, shade, wildlife and eventually the Atlantic Ocean itself.
Suddenly, Twyfelfontein no longer seemed isolated. It was connected.
The desert was not simply an empty barrier but a network of seasonal corridors linking the inland mountains with one of the richest marine ecosystems on Earth.
For thousands of years, the Benguela Current has carried cold, nutrient-rich water northward along Namibia’s coast. These nutrients fuel enormous blooms of plankton, supporting fish, seals, seabirds, dolphins and whales. Long before European ships arrived, this coastline would have been astonishingly productive. Seals bred in large colonies, seabirds nested in great numbers, shellfish covered suitable shores, and stranded marine mammals occasionally provided valuable food and materials.
To people who understood the seasons, rivers and coastline, this was not the edge of the world.
It was a place of opportunity.
That realisation became even clearer at Cape Cross.
Katharina and I stopped at the small museum beside the seal colony. It is modest, but beautifully presented. Its displays explain both the natural history of the Benguela ecosystem and the impact of European commercial exploitation during the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Whales were hunted severely. Seals were harvested for skins and oil. Seabirds were collected for feathers and eggs, while fish stocks were increasingly exploited.
Standing there, I realised that we are trying to imagine this coast through modern eyes. Today, the land appears harsh, empty and almost lifeless beyond the seals. Yet beside it lies a cold ocean capable of supporting immense concentrations of life.
What appears to us as Mars was, to those who truly understood it, a landscape of possibility.
Perhaps that explains Twyfelfontein better than anything else.
The engravings were not created in an isolated wilderness. They were made by people who knew springs, animal trails, river corridors and the seasonal opportunities offered by both the mountains and the sea. Their world was vastly larger than the few places where we now stop to admire the rock art.
The engravings are not simply pictures carved into stone. They are reminders that knowledge can transform an impossible landscape into a home.





Brandberg, Twyfelfontein And The Ancient Highways Of Hunter-Gatherers
Beneath the towering granite cliffs of Brandberg Mountain, it is difficult not to sense the immense age of the landscape.
Rising 2,573 meters above sea level, Brandberg is Namibia’s highest mountain. It is also known as Dâures or Daureb, a name commonly translated as “Burning Mountain”, while the German and Afrikaans name Brandberg carries much the same meaning.
The name becomes understandable in the late afternoon, when the granite cliffs catch the setting sun and seem to glow above the surrounding Namib.
The Brandberg massif was formed through volcanic and magmatic processes associated with the opening of the South Atlantic more than 120 million years ago. Much later, its gorges and rock shelters became important places for Late Stone Age hunter-gatherers.
More than a thousand rock-art sites have been documented across the mountain, containing tens of thousands of individual painted figures. Harald Pager devoted years to recording this vast artistic archive, often working in exceptionally difficult and remote conditions (Pager, 1989; Pager, 1993; Pager, 1995; Pager, 1998; Schmitt et al., 2000).
The paintings were not created by one person or during one brief period. They accumulated through repeated visits over thousands of years. Different artists added human figures, animals and other forms to shelters that may already have held significance for earlier generations.
It is tempting to imagine each shelter as a gallery. Yet this modern comparison can be misleading. These were not necessarily places where art was produced simply to be viewed or admired. The paintings probably formed part of wider social, spiritual and ritual practices, although the meaning of each image cannot now be recovered with certainty.
The White Lady Who Was Neither White Nor A Lady
Among Brandberg’s many paintings is Namibia’s most famous work of rock art: the figure traditionally called the White Lady.
The painting is situated in the Maack Shelter in the Tsisab Ravine. German geologist Reinhard Maack recorded the site in 1917 while surveying the Brandberg. It later attracted the attention of French priest and archaeologist Abbé Henri Breuil.
Breuil argued that the central figure was a light-skinned woman whose clothing and appearance reflected influence from the ancient Mediterranean world, possibly Minoan Crete. His interpretation captured the international imagination and gave the painting the name by which it is still known (Breuil, 1955).
Modern research has rejected this theory.
Closer examination of the anatomy and dress indicates that the central figure is most probably an African male. There is no convincing archaeological evidence that Mediterranean travellers reached Brandberg and created or influenced the painting.
Breuil’s interpretation is now often cited as an example of how early European researchers sometimes searched for foreign explanations when confronted with sophisticated African cultural achievements.
Harald Pager’s detailed reproductions helped demonstrate that the figure belonged within a wider southern African artistic tradition rather than a lost Mediterranean colony (Pager, 1989).
Even so, correcting Breuil’s error does not mean that we know exactly who the person was or what was happening in the scene. The figure has been interpreted as a hunter, dancer, ceremonial participant or ritual specialist. A trance-related interpretation is possible, but it should not be presented as proven.
The painting is not a simple historical photograph. It is a complex visual statement whose original meaning was embedded in a cultural world that can now only be approached through comparison, archaeological context and surviving San knowledge.
Beyond The Hunting Scene
For much of the twentieth century, southern African rock paintings were described mainly as records of hunting. Animals were assumed to represent prey, while human figures were read as hunters pursuing them.
Ethnographic research among San communities profoundly changed this interpretation.
San oral traditions and documented ritual practices showed that animals could possess social, symbolic and spiritual importance extending far beyond their value as food. Researchers such as Patricia Vinnicombe and David Lewis-Williams argued that many rock-art images related to healing dances, altered states of consciousness, rain-making, initiation and encounters with the spirit world (Vinnicombe, 1976; Lewis-Williams, 1981; Lewis-Williams, 2002).
This does not mean that every painted animal represents a trance vision or that all southern African rock art has one universal explanation. Different paintings were created in different places and periods, and their meanings would have varied.
Nevertheless, the older idea that the art was simply an illustrated hunting diary is no longer adequate.
Animals such as eland, antelope and giraffe could embody potency, transformation and spiritual power. The eland was especially important in the recorded beliefs of several San communities and was associated with healing, initiation, marriage, rain and altered states reached during ceremonial dances (Vinnicombe, 1976; Lewis-Williams, 1981).
Some images combine human and animal characteristics. Known as therianthropes, these figures may relate to transformation, ritual identity or experiences encountered during trance. Rather than representing imaginary animals in the modern sense, they may depict people moving between ordinary and spiritual states of being.
Twyfelfontein: Images Carved Into The Desert
Approximately 150 kilometers North of Brandberg lies another extraordinary rock-art landscape: Twyfelfontein, also known as /Ui-//aes.
Unlike Brandberg, which is best known for paintings, Twyfelfontein is celebrated primarily for its engravings. Thousands of figures were pecked, scratched and carved into the surfaces of sandstone slabs. Animals, tracks, human footprints and geometric forms appear across a valley that attracted repeated human activity for millennia.
Twyfelfontein became Namibia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. UNESCO recognised it as one of Africa’s largest and most important concentrations of rock engravings and as an exceptional record of the ritual practices of hunter-gatherer communities in southern Africa (UNESCO, 2007a; UNESCO, 2007b).
More than 2,000 individual figures have been formally recorded, while broader tourism and archaeological accounts frequently refer to more than 2,500 engravings when additional motifs and panels are included. The exact total depends partly on how tracks, figures and engraved panels are counted.
Dating rock engravings is difficult because the stone itself generally cannot be dated in the same way as organic archaeological material. The art accumulated over a long period, and published estimates vary. Many of Twyfelfontein’s best-known engravings are associated with the Later Stone Age and the past several thousand years, while UNESCO identifies the site as recording hunter-gatherer ritual traditions over at least two millennia (UNESCO, 2007a; Kinahan, 2011).
It is therefore safer to think of Twyfelfontein as an evolving cultural landscape rather than a monument created at one moment in history.
Water In A Dry Land
The presence of water helps explain why the valley became so important.
The name Twyfelfontein means “uncertain spring”, referring to the limited and sometimes unreliable water source in the valley. Even an intermittent spring or underground aquifer would have held great value in this arid environment.
Water attracted animals. Animals attracted hunters and observers. People returned to camp, obtain water, gather food and perhaps participate in ceremonies connected with the place.
UNESCO’s assessment emphasises the relationship between the rock art, ritual behaviour and the landscape beside the aquifer. The valley was therefore not simply a convenient stopping point. Water, wildlife, human survival and spiritual meaning appear to have become closely connected there (UNESCO, 2007a; UNESCO, 2007b).
The engravings include giraffe, rhinoceros, elephant, zebra, kudu, ostrich, antelope and feline forms. Human and animal tracks are also unusually prominent.
Their accuracy reveals intimate ecological knowledge.
A skilled tracker does not identify an animal merely by the general outline of its footprint. The shape of the pads, number and position of toes, depth of the impression, direction of movement and relationship with other signs can all matter. The engravers of Twyfelfontein belonged to communities for whom such knowledge was essential.
The tracks may have been used when teaching younger people, but this remains an interpretation. They may also have represented journeys, animals encountered in ritual experience, or relationships between species and particular places.
Their placement within an important ritual landscape suggests that practical and spiritual knowledge may not have been separated in the way modern societies often separate them.
The Lion Man
One of Twyfelfontein’s most discussed engravings is commonly called the Lion Man.
The image resembles a large feline but includes unusual features, most famously a long tail ending in a form compared to a human hand or footprint. It is often interpreted as a therianthropic image: a figure combining human and animal characteristics.
Some researchers and guides connect it with the transformation of a ritual specialist during trance. Such an explanation is consistent with broader interpretations of southern African hunter-gatherer art, but the engraving does not come with a written explanation. Its precise meaning remains unknown.
Its importance lies partly in this ambiguity.
The Lion Man reminds us that the engravings did not necessarily depict only animals observed in ordinary life. They could also express ideas about identity, transformation, power and the relationship between human beings and other living creatures.
Modern archaeology asks us to look beyond the idea that rock art was mere decoration. These images formed part of systems of memory, knowledge, social practice and belief.
Ancient Highways Across The Desert
One of the most intriguing questions is whether the people who used Brandberg and Twyfelfontein also travelled westwards to the Atlantic Ocean.
The careful answer is that such movement is plausible, but has not been directly proven for the individual communities responsible for the art.
Archaeology demonstrates that prehistoric people occupied both Namibia’s interior and its Atlantic coastline. Marine resources were used at coastal sites, while shells and shell ornaments sometimes travelled considerable distances through movement or exchange. Hunter-gatherer communities were also highly mobile, responding to changing distributions of water, food and social opportunities (Kinahan, 2011).
However, no continuous chain of camps has demonstrated that the same families who engraved Twyfelfontein regularly walked to the Skeleton Coast according to a fixed annual schedule.
The possibility remains compelling because of the shape of the land.
Namibia’s ephemeral rivers, including the Huab, Aba Huab, Ugab, Uniab and Hoanib, form natural corridors running through the dry interior towards the Atlantic. The Tsisab drainage provides similar access through the Brandberg landscape.
For travellers on foot, these valleys would have offered easier terrain and clearer navigation than exposed mountain slopes or open gravel plains. They could also provide shade, edible vegetation, wildlife and occasional water after rainfall. In some places, water persists beneath the sand even when none is visible on the surface.
Any journey between Twyfelfontein and the Atlantic would have covered well over 100 kilometers. The precise distance would have depended upon the route, the position of water and the condition of the landscape. Travel speed would have varied according to heat, season, group composition and the need to gather food along the way.
Rather than imagining a straight march towards the ocean, it is more realistic to picture movement as a sequence of decisions: from one known water source to another, through places remembered by older generations, while following wildlife and responding to changing conditions.
Did The Engravers Know The Ocean?
Twyfelfontein contains an unusual engraving commonly described as a seal. Its presence at an inland site has encouraged the idea that the artists knew the Atlantic coast.
That is possible, but the image cannot prove how this knowledge was acquired.
The engraver may have personally visited the coast. The image could also reflect information shared by travellers, encounters with people from other areas, or knowledge passed through exchange networks. It might even have carried symbolic meanings unrelated to a literal journey.
Claims that Twyfelfontein contains definite representations of whales or penguins should be treated more carefully unless the specific panels and supporting archaeological publications can be identified. The seal-like image is better documented, but even its identification and significance remain open to interpretation.
The most responsible conclusion is that inland and coastal communities were connected in some way, but that the frequency, direction and scale of their movements remain uncertain.
Science is not weakened by uncertainty. Its strength lies in recognising the difference between what the evidence demonstrates and what it merely allows us to imagine.
Why Paint Here, But Carve There?
Visitors often ask why the artists painted in the shelters of Brandberg but engraved the rocks at Twyfelfontein.
Archaeologists cannot identify one definitive reason. The difference was probably shaped by geology, available materials, local artistic traditions and the ways in which particular places were used.
The first clue lies beneath our feet.
Brandberg consists mainly of extremely hard granitic rock. Engraving such a surface with stone tools would have required considerable effort. The mountain does, however, contain numerous shelters, overhangs and relatively smooth protected surfaces suitable for painting.
Artists created colours from mineral and organic materials, including ochres, charcoal and pale mineral compounds. These pigments were mixed with liquid or binding substances before being applied to the rock.
The exact recipes used at Brandberg are not known in every case. Familiar claims involving blood, egg, animal fat or plant sap should not be repeated as established fact unless chemical analysis from a particular painting supports them.
Protection from direct rain, sunlight and wind allowed many images to survive, although they remain extremely fragile.
Twyfelfontein presents a different geological opportunity.
Many sandstone surfaces are covered by a dark natural patina commonly called desert varnish. This coating develops slowly through interactions between dust, minerals, moisture, weathering and possibly microbial activity. By striking or pecking through the darker surface, artists exposed the lighter sandstone beneath, producing images with strong contrast.
Rather than adding colour, they created images by removing the outer layer.
Brandberg’s hard granite and protected shelters therefore favoured painting, while Twyfelfontein’s patinated sandstone was particularly well suited to pecked engraving. Geology did not determine human behaviour completely, but it helped shape the techniques available at each place.
The position of the art may also have mattered. Many Brandberg paintings occur inside shelters and beneath overhangs, while numerous Twyfelfontein engravings are situated on exposed slabs within a landscape associated with water and repeated human activity.
It is tempting to conclude that Brandberg’s shelters were private ceremonial spaces while Twyfelfontein’s panels were public teaching places. The evidence, however, does not allow such a neat division.
Practical instruction, storytelling, ritual and social gathering may have overlapped. Hunter-gatherer communities would not necessarily have separated ecological knowledge from spiritual belief in the way a modern textbook might.
The durability of the two techniques also differs. Paint can fade or wash away, especially when exposed to sunlight and water. An engraving may survive as long as the rock surface remains intact. Whether the creators deliberately chose engraving to make certain ideas more permanent is unknown.
What can be said is that the artists understood their materials.
They did not impose one technique indiscriminately upon every landscape. They responded to the texture, hardness, shelter and colour of the stone. At Brandberg, the story was carried in pigment; at Twyfelfontein, it was revealed by breaking through the darker surface of the rock.
The landscape was not merely a background for their art. It became part of the way the art was made and experienced.
Where The Desert Meets An Ocean Of Life
Namibia’s Skeleton Coast presents an extraordinary contradiction.
From the land, the environment seems almost empty. Windswept dunes, gravel plains and dry riverbeds extend towards the horizon. Rainfall is exceptionally low, permanent surface water is scarce and large areas appear more suited to another planet than to human habitation.
Only a few hundred meters away lies one of the world’s great marine upwelling systems.
Its biological abundance begins with the cold Benguela Current.
The Benguela system extends along the western coast of southern Africa and forms one of the world’s four major eastern-boundary upwelling systems. Prevailing winds drive warmer surface water offshore, allowing cold, nutrient-rich water to rise from greater depths (Hutchings et al., 2009).
These waters carry nitrates, phosphates and other nutrients into the sunlit upper layers of the ocean. Microscopic phytoplankton use those nutrients to grow. Zooplankton feed on the phytoplankton, small fish consume the plankton, and larger fish, seabirds and marine mammals feed at higher levels of the same food web.
The result is exceptional biological productivity.
Sardines, anchovies, horse mackerel and other fish have historically occurred in large concentrations within the Benguela ecosystem. Hake and other demersal fish occupy deeper waters. Cape fur seals, dolphins, whales, sharks, cormorants, gannets, gulls and penguins all depend, directly or indirectly, upon the productivity generated by upwelling (Hutchings et al., 2009).
Conditions are not uniformly rich everywhere or at all times. Upwelling intensity, oxygen levels, temperature and fish distribution fluctuate. The Benguela can experience dramatic changes, including low-oxygen events and shifts in the distribution of commercially important species.
Nevertheless, it remains one of the most productive marine systems on Earth.
A Coast Alive With Animals
Before industrial exploitation, Namibia’s coastline supported immense concentrations of marine life.
Migrating southern right and humpback whales travelled through southern African waters. Fish gathered where currents and nutrients created favourable feeding conditions. Seabirds bred on islands and isolated coastal sites. Cape fur seals formed large colonies where beaches and access to feeding grounds allowed them to reproduce.
At Cape Cross, vast numbers of seals still gather today. The sound, smell and constant movement offer a powerful glimpse of the biological abundance sustained by the Benguela system.
Early European visitors quickly recognised the economic value of the coast.
Whales were hunted for oil, baleen and meat. Cape fur seals were killed for skins and oil. Seabird eggs and guano were harvested, while commercial fishing became increasingly industrialised. Exploitation developed over several centuries and intensified greatly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Industrial whaling severely reduced many whale populations around southern Africa before legal protection allowed some species to begin recovering (Best, 2007).
Fishing also transformed the ecosystem. Technological advances allowed vessels to locate, catch and process fish on a scale impossible for earlier coastal communities. Fisheries became economically important to Namibia and South Africa, but overexploitation and environmental variability caused major changes in the abundance and distribution of certain fish stocks.
The coast encountered by early sailors was therefore not an untouched paradise, nor was every species endlessly abundant. It was a dynamic marine system capable of supporting extraordinary concentrations of life, but also vulnerable to sustained industrial pressure.
People At The Edge Of The Atlantic
The coastline sustained human communities long before European ships arrived.
Care is needed, however, when naming those people.
“San” is a broad modern term for diverse hunter-gatherer communities rather than the name of one uniform population extending unchanged across southern Africa. Not every coastal archaeological site can automatically be attributed to the same communities that painted Brandberg or engraved Twyfelfontein.
Some coastal sites were occupied by earlier Later Stone Age foragers. Others may relate to communities ancestral to later San or Khoekhoe populations. Pastoralism, migration, exchange and changing social identities further complicated the picture through time (Kinahan, 2011).
It is therefore safest to speak more broadly of prehistoric hunter-gatherers or Later Stone Age coastal communities unless a particular cultural attribution is well supported.
For these people, the Atlantic offered food and raw materials rarely available inland.
Mussels, limpets and other shellfish could be collected from rocky shores. Fish could be caught along the shoreline or trapped in pools under suitable conditions. Seabirds and their eggs provided seasonal opportunities. Stranded whales, seals or dolphins might occasionally have supplied large amounts of meat, fat, bone and other materials, although such events were unpredictable.
Driftwood was valuable along a coastline where trees were scarce. Shells could be fashioned into ornaments and beads, while unusual stones and other materials could be carried inland or exchanged.
Shell middens provide direct evidence of repeated coastal food collection. Marine shells and ornaments found away from the coast demonstrate that coastal materials also travelled inland, either with the people who collected them or through social exchange.
The Atlantic did not simply mark the end of the land. It connected communities through resources, travel and knowledge.
Connected Resource Zones
The coastal desert and the Atlantic formed two contrasting but connected resource zones.
Fog brought moisture inland. Ephemeral rivers linked the interior to the sea. Coastal breeding colonies and marine productivity created seasonal concentrations of food. Inland mountains, springs and riverbeds supplied other resources.
Mobile communities could make use of this variability, but the desert was not crossed casually or according to one predictable timetable. Water remained the controlling factor. A journey possible after rainfall might become dangerous or impossible during another season.
River systems such as the Hoanib, Huab, Aba Huab and Ugab provide logical routes between inland landscapes and the Atlantic. Archaeological evidence makes movement and exchange highly plausible. What remains uncertain is exactly who travelled, how frequently they did so and whether the artists of Brandberg or Twyfelfontein personally participated in these journeys.
Standing on the Skeleton Coast today, appearances can be deceptive. The land seems silent and almost lifeless, while beneath the cold Atlantic waves an ancient physical process continues to support an ecosystem of extraordinary productivity.

Gathering Places In A Connected Landscape
Brandberg and Twyfelfontein may have been more than ordinary residential camps.
Important rock-art sites across southern Africa have sometimes been interpreted as aggregation places: locations where otherwise scattered groups gathered periodically for ceremonies, exchange, teaching, courtship, marriage and the renewal of social relationships.

For their creators, the paintings and engravings were probably part of something far more complex: ceremony, knowledge, social memory and a living relationship with animals, water, stone and the unseen world.
They were not simply pictures placed upon an empty landscape.
The landscape itself was part of their meaning.
Mountains offered shelter and orientation. Rivers guided movement. Springs attracted animals and people. The Atlantic supplied resources that could be carried inland. Stone surfaces influenced whether images were painted in pigment or revealed through patient engraving.
Long before modern maps, people already understood these landscapes in extraordinary detail.
Their highways were rivers and valleys. Their landmarks were mountains, waterholes and stars. Their libraries were stories, tracks and memories passed between generations.
