A TALE OF TWO ECOSYSTEMS
From 24 April to 1 May 2026, this journey transports you via private charter between two of Southern Africa’s most remarkable birding destinations:
Khamab! Game Reserve, in the heart of the Kalahari, is a place of subtle beauty: golden grasslands, red sands, and scattered pans that come alive after the rains. Here, larks, coursers, and sandgrouse patrol the open plains, while raptors rule the skies. It’s not uncommon to hear the haunting call of a Kori Bustard, or spot a Northern Black Korhaan lifting off in alarm. And as dusk settles, the chorus of nightjars begins.
The Pafuri region of Northern Kruger couldn’t be more different. It's a botanical Eden, with fever tree forests, riverine fig groves, and hidden pans alive with birdsong. This is where the elusive Pel’s Fishing Owl haunts the trees along the Luvuvhu River, and African Broadbills, Grey-headed Parrots, and Böhm’s Spinetails remind you that this corner of South Africa is ecologically closer to East Africa than the rest of Kruger.

WHAT MAKES THIS NATURE JOURNEY DIFFERENT?
While many birding safaris chase lists, Predators & Giants is curated for something deeper: experience over quantity. You’ll enjoy:
Private charters between locations less time in transit, more time in the field.
Secluded, luxury camps situated in prime birding areas.
Small group size, ensuring an unhurried pace and time to focus.
Expert guiding by Koenraad Pretorius, with over a decade of leading walking and photographic safaris.
Koenraad’s approach combines technical field knowledge with storytelling and a deep reverence for place. It’s not just about seeing a bird it’s about understanding the system it lives in.

WHY APRIL/MAY?
This is a season of transition. In Khamab!, the post-rainfall flush brings moisture-loving species out into the open. Pans are still wet. Birds are vocal. In Pafuri, it’s the tail-end of the migrant season is prime time for diversity, but with the added bonus of clear skies and cooler days.
It’s also outside of peak safari season, meaning fewer vehicles, quieter sightings, and a better sense of space. Just you, the birds, and the sound of wings through still air.
WHERE YOU’LL STAY
Khamab! Kanako Tented Camp: Malaria-free, remote, and wild. Surrounded by open plains and ancient Camelthorn trees.
The Outpost, Northern Kruger: Elevated suites with 180° views over the Luvuvhu Valley birding from your bed is possible here.
KOENRAAD’S PERSPECTIVE
“There’s a purity to birding the Kalahari. The silence, the space, it heightens your senses. A call cuts across the stillness, and suddenly you’re scanning the thornveld for movement. Then, just days later, you’re in Pafuri surrounded by green, with the flash of a Narina Trogon’s tail vanishing into the canopy. These places couldn’t be more different, and yet they both demand your full attention, your respect, and your awe.”
