People are always surprised to hear that rhino poaching is actually getting worse. It seems more and more awareness is being raised for this species on the brink of extinction and yet…
South Africa is home to about half of the black rhino population on the continent. But the total number of black and white rhinos poached is increasing: 499 were killed in 2023, up from 448 the year before.
While Kruger National Park recorded a decrease in poaching by 37%, KwaZulu-Natal is now facing the heat: in 2023, 307 rhinos were lost to poaching in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. It’s not just in national parks: 93 of the rhinos killed last year were on private reserves.
There are many ways we can support this keystone species, including going on Walking Safaris, which brings much needed funds to conservation projects. Together, lets safeguard the future for the next generation of rhinos.
